 Abstract:  Datus Kelley (1788-1866) and his family were some of the first permanent settlers of what later became Rocky River, Ohio. In 1833 Datus, with brother Irad, began to purchase land near Sandusky, Ohio, on Cunninghma's Island. The island was later renamed Kelly's Island. The Kelley Island Literary Society was established pursuant to the building of Kelley Hall, a hall Datus Kelley built. On December 22, 1860 the Literary Society published its first edition of the Islander. Anyone who wished to join the literary society was welcome, including women. The collection consists of issues of a manuscript newspaper published on Kelleys Island, in Sandusky Bay, Erie County, Ohio, by the Kellys Island Literary Society. The journal was "devoted to the discussion of questions in the Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Manufactures, Politics and Morality." Prepared and written during the winter months, issues were read before weekly gatherings of inhabitants of the isolated island. Includes reports on current events, editorials, letters to the editor, articles on history, humor, philosophy, religion, science, and travel, letters of soldiers participating in the American Civil War, and advertisements.

 Abstract:  Stanley G. Lockwood (1789-1860) moved from Connecticut to Painesville, Ohio, where he opened a general store, in 1835. His sons, George D. Lockwood (1830-1874) and John S. Lockwood (born 1834), continued the firm. In 1856 George moved to Davenport, Iowa and opened another store, Livingston and Lockwood. During the American Civil War he was an officer in Companies D and I of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His brother, Stanley B. Lockwood (1840-1884), served in Company G. of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Regiment and in Company K of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The collection consists of correspondence, military records, financial records, diaries, and newspaper clippings. A major topic of the correspondence is the American Civil War.

 Abstract:  Abner Royce served in Company H, 55th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was stationed at Camp Chase, Ohio, and at camps in Virginia during the Civil War. His parents resided in Bloomville, Ohio. William D. Royce was an inspector for the Cleveland Division of the American Protective League, which in 1919 became the Loyal American League. The collection consists of descriptive rolls and letters from Abner Royce to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Royce; sketchbook of Henrietta L. Royce; papers of the Cleveland Division of the American Protective League, including a plan of organization, inspector reports, form letters and other correspondence, and handbills; miscellaneous letters, stock certificates, and other family papers.

 Abstract:  Cyrus H. Stockwell (died 1864) was a soldier in Company G, 77th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He enlisted on September 1, 1862. He was wounded during battle at Sabrine Crossroads, near New Orleans in April 1864, and died on May 13, 1864, at the age of 32, at New Orleans, Louisiana. He is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Acton, Massachusetts. Stockwell spent some time on patrol boats in and around Louisiana and Texas. The collection consists of thirteen letters and three diaries written by Stockwell during the Civil War.

Dickson of Olivesburgh, Richland County, Ohio, during the Civil War, describing his general duties, drills, marches, lack of food, and other aspects of camp life, as well as his own feelings about the war and its causes and the competence of the military leadership.

Bascom's son, Gustavus, fought in the Civil War and became a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army.  Abstract:  Franklin A. Wise (b. 1841) was a native of Greentown, in Stark County, Ohio, who was drafted into the Union Army during the American Civil War. He fought with the 76th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry and participated in the siege of Vicksburg. He was discharged near Black River, Mississippi, on August 4, 1863. The collection consists of two diaries dated from December 3, 1862 to October 10, 1864 which detail Wise's experiences in the Union Army and his return home after his discharge.
